Gardening Volunteer (Youth Opportunity 16-25)

We are looking to appoint 1-2 Gardening Volunteers to join our passionate Gardening Team at Shakespeare North Playhouse.

The role involves looking after our gardens and tending to our house plants to create Shakespeare themed gardens and create habitats for wildlife.

If you’re passionate about gardening or looking to gain more experience in a horticultural role for paid employment, then look no further, this is the role for you!

Volunteers should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able work as part of a team and able to do general gardening tasks. (e.g. pruning, potting, digging and planting)

Shakespeare North Playhouse is a unique new arts venue, opened in the summer of 2022. It presents a vibrant contemporary cultural and learning programme featuring home co-produced and visiting performances, as well as comedy, music, community work, hire and events and a range of education and training activities.

As a Gardening Volunteer, you will be part of the team that maintains and develops our gardens and houseplants, so that they can be enjoyed by all the visitors that attend our wonderful venue.

When you’re in your volunteer role, your will be responsible for making sure visitors feel welcome, safe and engaged with during their time with us. As you may come across visitors whilst volunteering.

The role will be varied with changing gardening tasks as the seasons and the weather changes, as well as linking in with seasonal and performance themes throughout the year.

Volunteer duties include:

  • Watering, pruning and potting/repotting of houseplants.
  • Plant identification and planning
  • Planting and sowing seeds/bulbs
  • Pruning, tidying and watering.
  • General weeding and removal of unwanted plants.
  • Creating season and performance displays (e.g. Easter and Halloween)
  • Helping to source plants and gardening resources (optional)
  • Building raised beds/planters (optional)
  • Looking out for the health and safety of your team members, visitors and members of the public.
  • Reporting any issues or concerns to the Facilities Manager
