Artist Development

We are passionate about working with a diverse range of artists, celebrating different voices and art forms. We plan to make Shakespeare North Playhouse burst at the seams with art of every kind!

As a new organisation, we’re developing the ways we can support artists and not-for-profit companies.

We want to evolve our understanding of what local and North West artists need from us and what the challenges are in this post-pandemic era.

To help us connect with artists and to listen, we plan to run a range of different discussion events from Autumn 2022 through to Autumn 2023.

We’ll post information about these events here on this page and on our social media channels.

We plan to support a range of residencies and work-in-progress sharings throughout the year for artists working in the performing arts at all career stages. We are particularly interested in hearing from artists who are based in Knowsley and the Liverpool City region who would benefit from booking some time in the Studio to develop their work. Whilst the Studio is a busy space for performances and rehearsals, wherever possible we want to make it available to local artists working in performing arts. We would also like to support artists who are working in outdoor spaces, and we can achieve this with our work in the Sir Ken Dodd Performance Garden. If you’d like more information on this, please contact [email protected]

As part of Shakespeare North Playhouse’s commitment to supporting the independent sector, we are working with a number of Associate Artists. These artists were invited to work with Shakespeare North, each with a specific creative remit. We recognised that by making this a formal relationship, we would jointly have a bigger impact. We are constantly evolving our associate programme and will post news on these opportunities as and when they arise.

Shakespeare North Playhouse is committed to supporting creativity. If you’d like to start a relationship with us or find out more about what we do, please get in touch with Siobhan Noble, Project Producer  [email protected]

Shakespeare North Playhouse aims to challenge, surprise and move audiences with a broad range of programming. We will explore and present the works of William Shakespeare and use these stories and themes to inspire the programme. There will also be times when the productions seen on our stages are unrelated to Shakespeare’s canon. Always, the programme will connect with the audiences of Knowsley and the Liverpool City Region.

As well as our own co-productions, we present work from visiting companies and artists throughout the year in the Cockpit Theatre, Studio and Sir Ken Dodd Performance Garden.

When programming, we think in seasons: Spring, Summer and Autumn/Winter. The Culture and Learning team identify work that is innovative, often connects with Shakespeare or looks at stories of heritage and contemporary culture, and will resonate with the audiences of Knowsley and Liverpool. The work will always have a commitment to championing diversity and difference and which offers a broad range of creative experiences.

In the first instance, please send us a much information as possible about your show. This can be tour packs, trailers, advice as to where we can see your work and how we can get to know it better. The Culture and Learning team meet on a regular basis to discuss submissions. We then balance the programme carefully to make sure we are offering a varied programme that responds to our core vision:

Our Vision

Inspired by Shakespeare. Bringing Joy. Together, we tell stories that feel like our own; that change the way we see the world. Opening doors, inviting debate, inspiring a love of learning and bringing joy to this place: our Shakespeare North Playhouse.

Spaces are programmed on a rolling basis, and around six – twelve months in advance. We are a small team, so are unable to read unsolicited scripts. If you have a show that you would like to put forward for us to consider, please send it to [email protected]

We love to hear from artists who are as excited about Shakespeare North Playhouse as we are. When casting and hiring creative teams for our productions we want to ensure we celebrate diversity and difference on and off the stages. With this in mind, we are keen to hear from artists who are currently underrepresented in theatre and the arts, including but not exclusively, working class, global majority & Deaf and disabled artists.  As a new organisation we are currently building our network of artists and creative practitioners, if you would like to be added to this database, please email [email protected]

Actors: Please include a link to your Spotlight or an example of your work.
