Chatty Café Attendees Explore Hip Hop Arts at Shakespeare North Playhouse

Tue 16 Jun, 2026

Chatty Café attendees recently swapped their usual conversations over a brew for something a little different as they explored Hip Hop arts at Shakespeare North Playhouse as part of Age Without Limits Day 2026.

Delivered in partnership with Powered by Hip Hop, the workshop introduced attendees to DJ mixing, scratch DJing and graffiti art in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Participants arrived with a list of their favourite songs and learnt how DJs mix music between tracks using professional DJ equipment. The activity was led by Tommy P-Nuts, a multiple national and international scratch DJ champion from Leigh.

For many, it was their first time using DJ decks.

Attendees also had the opportunity to design their own graffiti tags with artist Kingsyze before adding them to a community graffiti board.

One participant said:

“The DJing was fascinating. It’s the first time I’ve done this before and I really enjoyed myself.”

The workshop formed part of Age Without Limits Day, a national campaign encouraging people to challenge assumptions around ageing and continue trying new experiences throughout life.

The event highlighted Shakespeare North Playhouse’s role as more than just a theatre. Alongside productions, performances and creative events, the Playhouse continues to provide opportunities for local residents to connect, learn new skills and take part in activities they may never have considered before.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing attendees fully embrace activities that many had never experienced before. There was plenty of laughter, curiosity and conversation as people experimented with DJ decks, learnt scratching techniques and explored graffiti art.

Many attendees stayed behind after the workshop to continue chatting about the experience, sharing memories connected to the music they had chosen and reflecting on the importance of continuing to learn and try new things.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the activity such a success.
