Tue 30 Jun, 2026

Shakespeare North Playhouse has announced the appointment of director Stephen Fletcher (Instagram: @stephenfletcheruk) to lead this year's production of Christmas Carol.

Known for standout local productions including Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine, the comedy Making It, his self-penned disco spoof Mam I’m Ere!, numerous Christmas shows, and his work as a director and actor both nationally and internationally, Fletcher brings a wealth of experience in creating entertaining and accessible theatre for audiences of all ages.

Shakespeare North Playhouse, in collaboration with Three Pin Productions, has appointed Fletcher to direct a fresh new interpretation of Charles Dickens’ timeless festive classic, promising a production that captures the heart, humour and hope of the beloved story for audiences of all generations.

Fletcher said:

“It’s my favourite Christmas story — full of hope, warmth and heart, which feels especially important right now. I’m really happy to be making a family show that can entertain young and old alike and bring out the kid in everyone. Having worked on Christmas productions and pantomimes at various venues at home and around the country, alongside my own pop-up pantos in schools, it’s exciting to be part of a new team creating a fun, moving and modern version of such a classic story. If you haven’t visited Shakespeare North yet, hopefully this will be the perfect excuse to bring the whole family along. I love the space and I can’t wait to entertain everyone at home this Christmas.”

With Fletcher at the helm, audiences can expect a festive production that blends the enduring spirit of Dickens’ classic with a contemporary approach, creating an engaging theatrical experience for families visiting for the first time and returning audiences alike.

Christmas Carol will be staged at Shakespeare North Playhouse from Friday 20 November 2025 until Saturday, 2 January 2026 with further casting and production details to be announced.
